Weaving Workshop

Patacancha, Peru

During a full day of intimate interaction with a weaving cooperative in the mountains of Peru, you’ll get to complete your very own wall hanging, using hand-spun, botanically-dyed yarns and techniques that are centuries old.

For decades, our artisan partners in Patacancha have been weaving textiles on backstrap looms, creating colorful and intricate designs from the materials and ingredients that are endemic to the lush and vibrant region. During this one-day workshop, you’ll experience their ancestral textile-making process from start to finish. You’ll get to help wash and spin the alpaca wool yarn; tint it with natural and botanical dyes; and choose the colors and patterns for a wall-hanging you’ll create with your own hands, with the close mentorship of the artisan community. The day will also include a homemade lunch and ample demonstrations and expositions of local traditions – the kind that visitors don’t typically get to experience up close.

Pachamanca lunch prepared during Aula's weaving workshops

Pachamanca Lunch

The Pachamanca - earth oven - is a traditional meal prepared across the country for special events. Each region has their own special recipe, and we’re grateful to the community of Patacancha for sharing theirs with us.

Marinated meats, organic potatoes, sweet potatoes, plantain, roasted cheese and more are buried and cooked underground over hot stones. The result: an explosion of flavor only found in the Peruvian Andes.
